第一篇:励志英语美文 we can succeed

We Can Succeed When Britain's great Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, was young, he attended a public school called Harrow. He was not a good student, and as a matter of fact, had he not been the son of a famous leader, he probably would have been thrown out of the school for his offences. However, he completed his work at Harrow, went on to the University, and then had a successful career in the British Army, touring both Africa and India. He later was elected prime minister and brought great courage to Britain though his speeches and other work during the dark days of World War II.Toward the very end of his period as prime minister, he was invited to address the young boys at his old school, Harrow. In announcing the coming of their great leader, the headmaster said, “Young gentlemen, the greatest speaker of our time, our prime minister, will be here in a few days to address you, and you should obey whatever sound advice he may give you at that time.”

The great day arrived, and the prime minister appeared at Harrow. After being introduced, Sir Winston stood upnone of these can hold back a strong spirit.Think, for example, of Abraham Lincoln, who was elected president of the United States in 1860.He grew up on a small farm at what was then the edge of the settled part of the United States. He had only one year of regular education. In those early years, his family hardly had a penny and he only read about half a dozen books. In 1832 he lost his job and was defeated when he tried to get elected to the Illinois government. In 1833 he failed in business. In 1834 he was elected to the state government, but in 1835 the woman he loved died.In 1838 he was defeated when he tried to become a leader in the Illinois government, and in 1843 he was defeated when he tried to enter the U.S.Congress.In 1846 he was elected to Congress but in 1848 lost a second election and was forced out.In 1849 he was refused a job with the national government, and in 1854 he was defeated for the U.S.Senate.In 1856 he was defeated in the election for vice president, and in 1858 he was again defeated for the Senate. Many people consider Lincoln to be the greatest president of all time.Yet it should be remembered how many failures and defeats marked his early life. Some of the world's greatest men and women have met huge problems and difficulties at some time in their lives, but have gone on to do great deeds.Lock him in a damp prison, and you have a John Bunyan.Bury him in the snows of Valley Forge, and you have a George Washington.Make a musical genius unable to hear, and you have a Ludwig van Beethoven.Have him born black in a society filled with bitter hate between races, and you have a Martin Luther King, Jr.Have him born of parents, who survived a Nazi death camp, destroy his ability to walk when he is four, and you have the concert violin player, Itzhak Perlman.Call him slow to learn, and write him off as stupid, and you have an Albert Einstein.had he not been 经典虚拟语句,省略if 译为“他如果不是” Winston Churchill 温斯顿·丘吉尔,二战时期英国首相 Abraham Lincold 亚伯拉罕·林肯,美国总统

The Soundest Investment of All

by C.Jared Ingersoll

I feel very presumptuous and uncomfortable about trying to explain out loud the things Ibelieve in.But I do think that all human problems are in some way related to each other, soperhaps if people compare their experiences they may discover something in common in huntingthe answers.I am a very fortunate man for I lead a full and what is for me a happy life.I say this eventhough I happen to have had, in the course of it, a couple of severe personal blows. My first wife collapsed and died one day while she and I were ice skating, after eighteen years ofa most happy existence together. My only son, a sergeant in the army combat engineers, waskilled in Italy in the last war.Nevertheless, these tragedies did not throw me completely and Ihave been able to fill my life anew with happiness.I do not mean to sound calloused. Those blows hurt me deeply.I guess that two basicallyimportant things helped me most to recover. One is the fact that I have come to see life as agamble. The other is a belief in what some people call the hereafter.I try to live fully so thatwhen and if my luck changes there will be little room for regret or recrimination over time lost ormisspent. My belief in the hereafter is wrapped in the intangible but stubborn thoughts of alayman.Very likely I would get lost in trying to describe or defend, by cold logic, my belief inGod but nobody could argue me out of it.I have come to believe that I owe life as much as it owes me, and I suppose that explains thisfine satisfaction I get out of endeavoring to do a job to the best of what ability I have, and outof helping somebody else.As a kid I used to ride a rake in the hayfields.I got a tremendous kick out of trying to sweepevery field clean as a whistle. Here I made a surprising and happy discovery: that there couldbe actual enjoyment in the exercise of thoroughness and responsibility, and that duty didn’thave to be a drudge.I don’t know exactly why, but I like to do things for other people. Not only familyresponsibilities, work on a hospital board, and various church organizations but also the mostinconsequential things that might hardly seem worth the time.My office happens to be onIndependence Square and now and then I have occasion to direct a tourist to the Liberty Bell orfill him in on a little of the history of Philadelphia. The tourist doesn’t seem to mind and it makesme feel good.I’m afraid I’m not very profound.I have tried to comprehend why somethingso simple and so sound as the Golden Rule is so often forgotten or held in disrepute.I canonly say—and I say this quite selfishly—that I have found it a good investment. It has paid me avery high return, undoubtedly more than I deserve.C.

Life grows in the soil of time

What I believe, what I value most, is transitoriness. But is not transitorinesssomething very sad? No!It is the verysoul of existence. It imparts value, dignity, interest to life.Transitoriness creates timeyes, identical within the sense of time never ending, never beginningand deem such belief natural to every human soul-that in the universityprime significance must be attributed to this earth of ours.Deep down I believe that creation ofthe universe out of nothingness and of life out of inorganic state ultimately aimed at thecreation of man.I believe that man is meant as a great experiment whose possible failure ofman's own guilt would be paramount to the failure of creation itself.Whether this belief be true or not, man would be well advised if he behaved as though it were.

New challenges require new ways of thinking

Part car, part jet fighter, part spaceship, Bloodhound SSC aims to be the first land vehicle to break the 1,000mph barrier. One of the key challenges has been to design the wheels. How do you create the fastest wheels in history, make them stable and reliable at supersonic speeds, and with limited resources?

After much deliberation, and devising ideas that pushed the boundaries of material technology, Mark Chapman, chief engineer of the Bloodhound project said the team decided to take a step back and change the way they were trying to solve problems.“There’s very little we’ve actually developed that’s new,” he says, “what’s unique is how we apply technologies.”

They adopted an approach called the design of experiments – a mathematical technique of problem solving through doing lots of little experiments and then looking at the statistics all glued together.“All of a sudden, where we’d been knocking our head against the wall for maybe two, three, four months, we came up with a wheel design that would hold together and was strong enough,” he says.

What Makes Me Feel Big

J.Frank Dobie

“My mind is big when I look at you and talk to you,” Chief Eagle of the Pawnees said to George Bird Grinnell when, after years of absence, that noble writer appeared at his friend’s tepee. It is very difficult in drawing up a credo to be severely honest about one’s self, to avoid all traditional cant.We actually believe in what we value most.Outside of the realms of carnality and property, which men appearing in public generally pretend not to notice, I believe in and draw nourishment from whatever makes me feel big.I believe in a Supreme Power, unknowable and impersonal, whose handiwork the soul-enlarging firmament declares. However, I believe in questionings, doubtings, searchings, skepticism, and I discredit credu lity or blind faith. The progress of man is based on disbelief of the commonly accepted. The noblest minds and natures of human history have thought and sung, lived and died, trying to budge the status quo towards a larger and fuller status.I am sustained by a belief in evolution—the increasing purpose of life in which the rational is, with geological slowness, evolving out of the irrational. To believe that goodness and wisdom and righteousness, in Garden of Eden perfection, lie somewhere far ahead instead of farther and farther behind, gives me hope and somewhat explains existence. This is a long view.I do not pretend that it is a view always present in me.It does raise me when I have it, however.I feel no resentment so strongly as that against forces which make men and women afraid to speak out forthrightly. The noblest satisfaction I have is in witnessing the up movement of suppressed inpiduals and people.I make no pretense to having rid myself of all prejudices, but at times when I have discovered myself freed from certain prejudices, I have felt rare exhilaration. For me, the beautiful resides in the physical, but it is spiritual.I have never heard a sermon as spiritual in either phrase or fact as, “Waters on a starry night are beautiful and free.” No hymn lifts my heart higher than the morning call of the bobwhite or the long fluting cry of sandhill cranes out of the sky at dusk.I have never smelled incense in a church as refining to the spirit as a spring breeze laden with aroma from a field of bluebonnets. Not all hard truths are beautiful, but beauty is truth. It incorporates love and is incorporated by love.It is the goal of all great art.Its presence everywhere makes it free to all.It is not so abstract as justice, but beauty and intellectual freedom and justice, all incorporating truth and goodness, are constant sustainers to my mind and spirit.

The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity.Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more to me than any qualification I ever earned.

So given a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement.Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two.Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.

You might think I chose my second theme, the importance of imagination, because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so.Though I personally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, I have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense.Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared.

Growth that Starts from Thinking

It seems to me a very difficult thing to put into words the beliefs we hold and what they make you do in your life.I think I was fortunate because I grew up in a family where there was a very deep religious feeling.I don’t think it was spoken of a great deal.It was more or less taken for granted that everybody held certain beliefs and needed certain reinforcements of their own strength and that that came through your belief in God and your knowledge of prayer.

But as I grew older I questioned a great many of the things that I knew very well my grandmother who had brought me up had taken for granted. And I think I might have been a quite difficult person to live with if it hadn’t been for the fact that my husband once said it didn’t do you any harm to learn those things, so why not let your children learn them? When they grow up they’ll think things out for themselves.

And that gave me a feeling that perhaps that’s what we all must do—think out for ourselves what we could believe and how we could live by it.And so I came to the conclusion that you had to use this life to develop the very best that you could develop.

I don’t know whether I believe in a future life.I believe that all that you go through here must have some value, therefore there must be some reason. And there must be some “going on.” How exactly that happens I’ve never been able to decide. There is a future—that I’m sure of.But how, that I don’t know. And I came to feel that it didn’t really matter very much because whatever the future held you’d have to face it when you came to it, just as whatever life holds you have to face it exactly the same way.And the important thing was that you never let down doing the best that you were able to do—it might be poor because you might not have very much within you to give, or to help other people with, or to live your life with. But as long as you did the very best that you were able to do, then that was what you were put here to do and that was what you were accomplishing by being here.

And so I have tried to follow that out—and not to worry about the future or what was going to happen.I think I am pretty much of a fatalist. You have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.

The thermometer had dropped to 18 degrees below zero, but still chose to sleep in the porch as usual. In the evening, the most familiar sight to me would be stars in the sky.Though they were a mere sprinkle of twinkling dots, yet I had become so accustomed to them that their occasional absence would bring me loneliness and ennui. It had been snowing all night, not a single star in sight. My roommate and I, each wrapped in a quilt, were seated far apart in a different corner of the porch, facing each other and chatting away. She exclaimed pointing to something afar, “Look, Venus in rising!” I looked up and saw nothing but a lamp round the bend in a mountain path.I beamed and said pointing to a tiny lamplight on the opposite mountain, “It’s Jupiter over there!”

More and more lights came into sight as we kept pointing here and there.Lights from hurricane lamps flickering about in the pine forest created the scene of a star-studded sky. With the distinction between sky and forest obscured by snowflakes, the numerous lamp-lights now easily passed for as many stars.Completely lost in a make-believe world, I seemed to see all the lamplights drifting from the ground. With the illusory stars hanging still overhead, I was spared the effort of tracing their positions when I woke up from my dreams in the dead of night. Thus I found consolation even on a lonely snowy night!

You must study to be frank with the world:frankness is the child of honesty and courage.Say just what you mean to do, on every occasion. If a friend asks a favor, you should grant it, if it is reasonable;if not, tell him plainly why you cannot. You would wrong him and wrong yourself by equivocation of any kind.Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or keep one.The man who requires you to do so is dearly purchased at a sacrifice.Deal kindly but firmly with all your classmates. You will find it the policy which wears best.Above all, do not appear to others what you are not.If you have any fault to find with any one, tell him, not others, of what you complain. There is no more dangerous experiment than that of undertaking to do one thing before a man's face and another behind his back.We should say and do nothing to the injury of any one.It is not only a matter of principle, but also the path of peace and hornor.
