“People are like tea bags—you have to put them in hot water before you know how strong they are.” I can still remember the words that dad said to me years ago. When I was young, I used to be very naughty.Life then was like a glass ball, shining with bright colors.I had once gone down to the river bank, catching a great many worms and was afterwards punished by mum.I had ever cut the pillow towel into pieces in order to make clothes for my dolls.Similarly, I was then blamed seriously.Once I even put the hot iron on the floor which immediately burnt a big hole on the carpet.Although I had done so many annoying things, my childhood seemed to be rather colorful. However, I had never had a clear definition about myself. But then something happened. It had made a great difference to my life and made who I am now.I had always been afraid of having the intravenous drop in hospital. The first time I was taken to have the drop, I cried for almost half an hour and finally gave off at father's severe scolding.Watching the cold needle stabbing into my skin, I cried even more loudly. At that time, I never dared to take a glance at my hand and always needed my mother to stay with me at my side.Even if mum had told me many times,“ honey, there’s nothing to be scared of.Just close your eyes and sleep.” I would still keep my eyes wide open, watching the liquid flow through the bottle and never slept.Nevertheless, things just happened in a casual way. When I caught a high fever again when young, mum had to send for the doctor home to treat me.I was so sick that I became quite drowsy and then slept. When I suddenly woke up in the afternoon, I found the liquid in the bottle had already flown over, while mum and dad were not around.I yelled, but finally found it was of no use.So I jumped out of the bed and pulled up the tubule. In the nature of things, the blood came out and dropped along the way I went downstairs.Things became different at the time I went down alone.I discovered that I could be independent.I was much stronger than I had thought.Looking back on the girl who cried all day, I came to understand suddenly that the strong part of the inner myself had been existing all the time.Seeing the anxious mum, I revealed a big smile to her.I could see that mum was trying to hold her tears back and scrubbed my blood on the hand. She didn't know that her little girl had stealthily grown up.Since then, I became stronger. As you see now, standing in front of you is a confident and sunny girl.In my grown-up life, I've never cried for being injured no matter how serious it is.I can even go to the hospital alone when mum and dad are on business.I came across so many difficulties in life, while I've never thought of giving up.Thanks to that extraordinary experience at my age often, I discovereda person inside myself who has been so important and unique to me.Just like what dad had told me

before, “People are like tea bags—you have to put them in hot water before you know how strong they are.”

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical 1)therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2)census about mountain 3)gorillas.These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world;this put them severely under threat of 4)poaching and being put into the zoo.She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5)cuddled their babies.Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs.Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6)timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore.Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal.Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica.Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks. All these 7)appalling(令人震惊的)facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8)eroding(侵蚀)our resources.Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the

benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment. Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9)plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10)invalids(残疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do.These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care.Because they still want their Mother Nature back.Because they know it still belongs to them. This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it's all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish. The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs.I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some-thing else, someplace else.a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.Once again, I have come to think of Mrs.Dian Fossey be-cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world. And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.Thank you very much.

Answer: Thank you.I remember, on my very first day of my beloved university, one of my professors said to me,“From now on, you’ll be on a journey between who you think you are and who yo can be.The key is to allow yourself to continue the journey in the ocean of the books.”And I do learn a lot from books: I know the geometry of Euclid, logic of

Aristotle, fable of Aesop known to children around the world.Well, no offense to all those great authors of the books, but during my three years at my university, I do realize that personal experience through practice means more to me.As we are in this global information age where both economic growth and inpidual opportunity are based on ideas, a commitment to providing all human beings the golden opportunity to develop themselves is so vital, not only to the people here, but all around. As we are in this transformational age where communications and commerce are global, investments are mobile, technology is almost magical, and the ambition for a better life is now universal, and I think this is why we are here today. We want to earn our personal experience through practicing our oral English, sharing our opinions of tourism and ecology with all the judges and audience here. And I think we are so lucky to be alive at this moment of the history.Never before have our nation enjoyed so much prospertity and so much social progress with so little internal crises. And never before have our young people had so much great opportunity to practice ourselves and, therefore, have a profound obligation to build a more perfect nation of our ancestor’s dream. And I think our government had provided us young people with the tools and condition to build the future of our dreams.Even if we know some rules, some regulations, or experiences from our books, we still simply cannot graft it onto today’s busier, more impersonal, complicated world.Instead, our challenges is to arrive at a consensus values and common vision of what we can do today inpidually andcollectively to build a strong family and strong community, and above all, make the world a better place for us to live.Thank you very much.Contestant#18, in your speech, you talked about ecotourism.Could you explain to us difference between ordinary tourists and e-tourists, or ecotourists?

Answer: Thank you for your question. And I think the key issue is the differences between our awareness.Fot example, if you want to go to a place to have a trip, enjoy your trip. And I think before you get on board, get on the bus, you can have the awareness that “I’m not a polluter, but an environment keeper.” We’re not go to all those scenic spots to estroy all those beautiful scenes but we to appreciate the Mother Nature giving us so much things.Thank you very much.Contestant #18,now that information technology is becoming more and more accessible to people in China, do you think books will become less and less important?

Answer: Well, I think, maybe, umm, I don’t think that all those echnologies can replace the importance of books. We’re in our modern village where so many new industries—IT industries, tourism ndustries—crop up every day and this brave new world seem a little bit dehumanizing and inhospitable to a lot of people. The world can no longer be defined as a place on a map or list or people in organizations but I think the true value, the essence of our village remains the same.It is the network of values relationship that support our lives and we can learn those things from our books because books is the very first beginning stage of what we learn.Thank you very much.I’d like to ask you a question about your prepared speech, please. You mention that the UN has declated the year 2002, I think it was, “The Year of Ecotourism.” Do you think that such gestures really serve a purpose? Answer: And I think one of my teachers said to me, when I prepared my prepared speech, and he tells me that if we pay more attention to omething like environmental protection or ecotourism, it is more, it is better for us to bear in mind we should learn something in our hearts, we should have something about the awareness about how to pay more respect to our environment, not to talk about something orally but to bear something in our hearts.Follow our hearts, our environment can be better.Thank you very much.

The story of old photos

An album records a person's life.If you open the album of your childhood, you will see some familiar old photos. They would bright you back to the old memories.Under the moonlight, let me tell you a story of an old photo. In the picture, my hands are full of mud.An innocent smile was in my face.Dad was stand beside me with a fish in his hands. What is the story of the picture?

That was a summer vacation. My father and I went back to my hometown. There is a river beside our hometown village. The water is clear and there is much fish swimming in the river. One day, my dad and I went to the river to catch fish.It was in summer, all kinds of wild flowers are smiling at me.They are greeting me with slight waving of their heads.I came to the riverside pleasantly. Then I looked for a cool place to be my battle field. The river neither too shallow and nor too deep. The water reaches my waist.Once I saw a fish swimming beside me, I came to catch it.However, the fish is very flexible and run away at once.I was busying for a long time, no fish was caught.I sought fish carefully and found a slow fish.I rushed to it but it turned away more quickly than my hands.I dropped into the bottom of the river and sands turned over to my face. How pity it was.I was depressed at that time.Dad laughed at me.“What a muddy baby”.Then father told me how to catch fish.He took out a barrel, some breads and a small net.He said: “tear the bread into small pieces and put them into the net, place the net between two rocks, then waiting for fish falling into the snare”.In the laughter, the day is getting dark and we caught several fish.My mother came to call us back for dinner. She saw the funny scene and took a photo with a sound of “Ka Cha”, a memory of amusing and warming. To turn the album, the old photos recall me to my childhood and wake me up the old memories.I can’t forget that innocence smiling and those muds. Those old photographs carry my childhood's tears and laughter. They are my precious wealth.

Our Future: A Battle between Dreams And Reality Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:

When I was in the primary school, I have a dream.I want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. When I was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. And when eventually I got into the university, my dream was to graduate. How pathetic! When we grow up, we dream less And become more realistic. Why? Why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be “fulfilled”? Why do we have to surrender to the so-called “reality”? What IS the reality actually?

Ladies And gentlemen, the reality is not real.It is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies.Flying, for example, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years.A hundred years ago, “man could not fly” was still regarded as the “reality”.Now if that was really the reality, what did the Wright brothers do? How did some of you get to Macau? Only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.People say that our future is a battle between the reality And our dreams. And if, unfortunately, Mr.Reality wins this war, then I see no future of mankind at all.AIDS will never be curable as this IS the reality;People living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this IS the reality;4)Disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings And intolerance IS the reality.Ladies And gentlemen, how many of you have a dream of being able to make a lot of money? Please raise your hands.Oh, quite a number of you!Actually, ladies And gentlemen, this is not a dream, but a task.Every one of us has to make a living, right? Anyway I hope your task will be accomplished. How many of you think that you have already fulfilled your dream And that you don't dream anymore? Dear 5)adjudicators, what do you think? C.S.Lewis once said,“You are never too old to dream a new dream.” So for our future, please dream And be unrealistic. Now that I am a university student, my goal is to graduate with excellences. But at the same time, I have a dream deeply rooted in our future. One day, people living in the areas now 6)sweltering with the horror of wars will be able to sit with their families And enjoy their every moment. One day, people from the rich countries are willing to share what they have with those from the poor countries And those from the poor countries will eventually be able to make their own happy living themselves. One day, different cultures in this age of globalization will coexist with tolerance And the unfriendly confrontations among them will be 7)eliminated.One day, the globe will share the dream with me And we will all contribute to making our dream come true. One day, our dream will defeat the reality!Thank you very much.主持人:Thank you.曹丰:Thank you.问题:Now in the age of the Internet, reading books does not seem as important as it once was.Do you think people can learn as much on the Internet as they can by reading books?Which method do you prefer?

回答:Thank you very much. And hello again ladies and gentlemen.Actually,I don't really agree with the first sentence of this topic:“In the age of the Internet, reading books does not seem as important as it was once.”Why?Why is it the case? Why is it the situation, ladies and gentlemen?Actually,Internet or books are just like tea or coffee. They are similar, but they are different.Unibersity students nowdays love to use the Internet to search for information when they are working with their essays.Like, last semester, when I was working with my physics essay,I logged into Google and I searched for “NEWTON” and all the laws and theories of Newton just popped out and I can choose whichever one I like to use.But when I walked into the library, all the books came out and I have to choose which one to read. How inconvenient!Maybe you can say at this moment,“Oh,Internet is better, books no use.”So I have to use Internet, right? But let's see the things in another way.I love traveling a lot and I love to bring a book with me.And I love to read my Da Vinci Code when I was having my trip on a bus or on a ship.Actually, whenever it is,wherever you go,whatever you are doing, you can take out a book and read if you feel like doing so.Now who will bother to take a laptop and switch it on,and search for the Internet connection, and look for stories to read. How inconvenient! So at this very moment I think it's quite dangerous for me,because I think I'm unable to answer the question in the topic“Which method do you prefer,Internet or books?”because I love the feeling of conjuring a hundred pages of Harry Potter, more than scrolling down the screen;but at the same time I love the feeling of searching the things, the speed of my searching for things on the Internet, more than wasting my time in the library. So in this age of Internet,in this age of modernization,in this age of civilization, why do you have to force someone to choose between internet and books?I prefer using both of them.Thank you very much.问题:Contestant No.13.Thank you very much for encouraging us to be unrealistic dreamers(Thank you)and not surrender to Mr.Reality.(hehe..)With the traffic jam getting worse--especially in big cities--I'm actually very interested in your childhood dream:To invent a device that can move people around easily. Is this still your dream? If not,why do you give it up?Is it because it is considered unrealistic?Thank you.回答:Thank you very much. This is not my dream now.Not because it is(not), realistic.Maybe you can say it's unrealistic. But if I,my interest is still inventing this device,I will keep on trying my best to invent this decive. My changing of my dreams is because of the fact that I realized my interest does not lie in science. Now I am a law school student. But last semester,as I've just mentioned,I was working on my physics essay paper and actually last semester I was a student in the school of aerospace.Oh my god, aerospace! And I've changed my major to law school. And so

the changing of my dream is actually because of the fact that I realize my interest lies in,maybe communicating with others,or having interactions with the others.Science is very fantastic, but it's not my piece of cake.Yes,so that's the reason.Thank you very much.问题:Thank you very much for your speeches.Talding about Internet,I just want to know your view.Do you believe everything is ture on the Internet? If not,why not?

回答:Thank you very much.I don't believe everything is true in the Internet. This is a straight forward answer. And if not,why not?Because I don't believe them. And I have an experience of meeting someone on the Internet who claims to be a girl.Yes and,a very sad, sorry story for me.But yes,for this reason,I think I don't believe that everything on the Internet is true. But I will try my best to discover if that was true or not,or that was falsified or not.Thank you very much.问题:Contestant No.13.Thank you very much for your speeches. You were talking about dreams being realistic or unrealistic and your current dream is to graduate from law school. But what is your realistic or unrealistic dream after that? What do you want to use your graduation in law for?

回答:Thank you very much.Actually,my dream,as mentioned in the last part of my speech,is to share my feelings, share my dreams with the globe. And when all the people in this Earth have my dream, they will work hard for the social betterment,I believe in that.So after I've graduated from law school,I think I will try my best to persuade the others to,to accept my dream, and that is exactly why I am here.I am here trying to persuade you all,I think you all, after listening to my speech, hopefully, you can try to understand my dream and that we are all a member of the global village, and we have to try our best to work hard for the social betterment of all. This is why I want to be,saying, speaking something here, and that is my goal--or realistic or unrealistic dream after I've graduated.I think I will try my best to du what I've said before.Thank you very much.
