A Where is that noise coming from? Not sure? Try living with your eyes closed for a few years.Blind people are better at locating sounds than people who can see, a new study says, without the benefits of vision the ears seem to work much better.Previous studies have shown that blind people are better than others at reaching out and touching the sources of sounds that are close by.Researchers from the University of Montreal wanted to see if blind people were also better at locating sounds that are far away.Twenty-three blind people participated in the study. All had been sightless for at least 20 years.Fourteen of them had lost their vision before age 11.the rest went blind after age 16.The experiment also included 10 people who could see but were wearing blind-folds.In one task, volunteers had to pick the direction of a sound coming from about 3 metres away. When the sound was in front of them or slightly off center in front, both groups performed equally well. When sounds came from the side or the back, however, the blind group performed much better than the blindfolded group. The participants who had been blind since childhood did slightly better than those who lost their sight later.Recognizing the locations of distant sounds can be a matter of life-or-death for blind people, say the researchers.Crossing the street, for instance, is much harder when you can’t see the cars coming.Still, the researchers were surprised by how well the blind participants did, especially those who went blind after age 16.In another experiment, the scientists also found that parts of the brain that normally deal with visual information became active in locating sound in the people who were blind by age 11.These brain parts didn’t show sound-location activity in the other group of blind people or in the sighted people. The scientists now want to learn more about the working of brains of “late-onset” blind people.()1.The recent study shows blind people are better at telling

.A.The sources of loud sounds.B.the locations of distant sounds C.the direction of sharp sounds

D.the distance of a sound in front of them()2.Which would be a proper title for the passage?

.A.A Research on Blind People

B.Where is That Noise Coming from? C.Hearing Better in the Dark

D.What If Living Without Your Eyes?()3.If people were asked to tell the direction of a sound from the side, who would perform best?

.A.Those who are blind.B.Those who have gone blind since children.C.Those who went blind at age 16.D.Those who are blindfolded.()4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

.A.Whether to be able to locate the sounds can be of vital importance for the blind.B.All the volunteers in the experiment are sightless.C.All the participants did equally well when picking sounds from whatever direction.D.The later people become blind, the better they can perform in telling the direction of sounds.()5.What do we know about that parts of brain dealing with visual information are active in locating sounds?

.A.This happens in almost all the testers.B.This only occurs in the people who were blind after age 16.C.It remains nothing new to the scientists any more.D.It remains a mystery why it is so.B People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀的)across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said.“Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect(忽略)the mouth.” According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of.expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners.“The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said.“Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.” In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have persified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion.Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.()6.The discovery shows that Westerners

.A.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth B.consider facial expressions universally reliable C.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways D.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions

()7.What were the people asked to do in the study?

.A.The participants in the study.B.The researchers of the study.C.The errors made during the study.D.The data collected from the study.()9.In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to

.A.do translation more successfully B.study the mouth more frequently C.examine the eyes more attentively D.read facial expressions more correctly

Perhaps some early hunters found that they could roll the carcass(尸体)of a heavy animal through the forest on log more easily than they could carry it.However, the logs themselves weighed a lot.It must have taken a great prehistoric(史前的)thinker to imagine two thin slices(薄片)of log connected at their centers by a strong stick, this would roll along just as the logs did and axle came into being, and with them the first carts.41.The wheel is important because _______.it was man’s first real invention B.all transportation depends on it C.every machine depends on it D.both B and C 42.The wheel is called _______.A.simple B.complicated

S Until late in the 20th century, most Americans spent time with people of generations. Now mid-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves. That’s because we group people by age.We put our three-year-olds together in day-care center, our 13-year-olds in school and sports activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior-citizen homes. Why? We live away from the old for many reasons: young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears for aging and dying. It is much harder to watch.someone we love disappear before our eyes.Sometimes it’s so hard that we stay away from the people who need us most.Fortunately,.some of us have found our way to the old.And we have discovered that they often save the young.A reporter moved her family onto a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter baked banana bread for the neighbours and had her children deliver it and visit.Soon the children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects.“My children have never been less lonely,” the reporter said. The young, in turn, save the old.Once I was in a rest home when a visitor showed up with a baby. She was immediately surrounded.People who hadn’t gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair.Even those who had seemed asleep wake up to watch the child.Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.Grandparents are a special case. They give grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it, “my grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end.”

Grandchildren speak of attention they don’t get from worried parents.“My parents were always telling me to hurry up, and my grandparents told me to slow down,” one friend said.A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer, more trusting.80 Now in an American family, people can find that ____.A.children never live with their parents B.not all working people live with their parents C.aged people are supported by their grandchildren D.grandchildren are supported by their grandparents 81 The reason why old people are left alone may be that ____.A.the old don’t like to live in a big family

B.the young can’t get enough money to support the old

C.different generations have different lifestyles

D.the old are too weak to live with the young 82 The fact that the reporter told us shows that ___.A.old people in America lead a hard life B.old people in America enjoy banana bread C.she had no time to take care of her children D.old people are easy to get along with 83 Seeing a baby, the old people get excited because ____.A.they had never seen a baby before B.the baby was clever and beautiful C.the baby brought them the image of life D.the baby’s mother would take care of them

Why do children not get attention from their parents?

A.Because they often make trouble and make their parents disappointed.B.Because their parents are too busy to take care of them.C.Because their parents have to take care of their grandparents.D.Because their parents have been out of work for a long time.Keys: BCDCB

一、骑行调研“中国梦”

For his graduate thesis, a German student rode 5,800 kilometers in China to learn about the Chinese Dream among ordinary people.“what’s your Chinese Dream?” This is the question he raised for every stranger he came across on his 100-day journey. The 28-year-old student surnamed Jorg came to China for the first time in 202_.After a year in China, he was able to use chopsticks and speak Chinese.Because of his interest in Chinese culture, he went to Zhe-jiang University in 202_ for a master’s degree in sinology

Jorg learned the term “Chinese Dream” in 202_, and now it has become a hot word in Chinese society. With an eagerness to understand the true connotation of the term among ordinary Chinese people, he started his journey on May 1st, 202_.Jorg believes that riding is natural, environmentally-friendly, and flexible. Before starting his trip, he specifical1y carried out bicycle training. His trip covered 12 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, from the northernmost city of Mohe to the southernmost city of Sanya.Jorg has set up a public account on social media to record and share his experiences during the trip.Urban-rural disparity was one of the focuses of his investigation. He found that people in the countryside long for a peaceful life, while urban residents follow their hearts. In addition, older generations of Chinese are more concerned with social stability and equality than economy desires, Jorg said, adding that education and inpidual development are the major consideration of the young generation.“Though the people seek their own way to realize their dreams, they all believe that a strong country can make everything possible,” Jorg said.

When I met him,I had a lot of anger inside of me.I‘ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time.I know kids who have been shot or beaten up.I have friends who ended up in prison.I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr.Clark wouldn’t let that happen.Mr.Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work.My grades rose.In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day,he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show,he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full.We did not want to let him down.Mr.Clark was selected as Disney‘s 202_ Teacher of the Year.He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names,Mr.Clark said,“You’re all going.”

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image(形象)of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it had ever been in the past.“We were surprised by just how positive(肯定的)today‘s young people seem to be about their families,” said one number of the research team.“They’re expected to be rebellious(叛逆的)and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds: they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There‘s more negotiation(商议)and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat(捣乱)。”

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends.“My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall.“I always tell the when I‘m going out clubbing. As long as they know what I’m doing, they‘re fine with me.” Susan Crome, who is now 21,agrees.“Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example,as long as I’d done all my homework,I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts.A researcher comments(评论),“Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over.”

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 202_.While most people were warming up their cars,Trevor,my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work.On arrival,he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor,he returned to find his bike gone. The bike,a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport.Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk along long distances from where we live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story.Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up.Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job.It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so.This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we,too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small,an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.66.Why was the bike so important to the couple?

Of all systems of symbols, language is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that human beings,by agreement, can make anything stand for anything.Human beings have agreed,in the course of centuries of mutual(相互的)dependency,to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain happenings in their nervous system. We call that system of agreements language. There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for.Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head,by gold on the watch chain,or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in,so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.However obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject.Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if,and sometimes acting as if,there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by nature: foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can‘t they call things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough.Like the little boy who is reported to have said: “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals,” they feel that the symbol is inherently(内在地)connected in some way with the things symbolized.71.Language is a highly developed system of symbols because human beings _______.A.have made use of language for centuries

72.What can we conclude from Paragraph 2?

A.try very hard

74.The example of the little boy is used to show that ____________.A.adults often learn from their young

When did you last see a polar bear(北极熊)?On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago,you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day,the air temperature was 3℃,and the water temperature was a little higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island,New York are usually about the age of 60.Members must satisfy two requirements.First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group;this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club.Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.Dcotors don't agree about the medical effects of cold-winter swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops.Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter. The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm.Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water.A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming. The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all year round;they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says,“When I go into water,I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”

Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life.Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk.In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However,I believe that five is the best age to learn.By five or six,a child knows fear of water,a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid,to recognize true danger.Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous. To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn,as soon as possible, these four basic strokes;butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, and crawl.I feel that one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training. In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:

1.Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don't risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you,you may get into trouble.2.Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach,Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good.Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.3.Don't smoke.Swimming depends on a healthy body;good lungs are part of it.4.Work at any activity that builds muscles.69.Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____.A.they can talk B.they start walking C.they have no fear of the water

Is there a difference in meaning between“It's too late to make a telephone.Mary is asleep now.” and “It's too late to telephone.Mary will be asleep now?”

Yes.The difference is in the reason given for it being too late to telephone. In the first sentence“Mary is asleep now”,the speaker is stating a fact.In the second sentence“Mary will be asleep now,” the speaker is saying what Mary usually does.In fact,it's possible that Mary isn't asleep, but she is usually asleep at this time.So let's take two situations. In the first case, imagine Mary's mother answers the telephone. You:“May I speak to Mary, please?”

Mother:“No.It's too late.Mary is asleep now.”

You:“ Are you sure?It's only 10 o'clock.”

Mother:“ Yes.I went to her room and she was asleep.”

Jill:“No,It's too late. She will be asleep now.”

Jill knows that Mary always goes to bed before 10 o'clock ,so now she'll probably be asleep. But it is also possible that she is staying up late.73.In the first situation,Mary's mother_____.A.wants to tell you that she knows Mary is asleep B.knows that Mary was asleep

C.has no idea whether Mary is asleep or not D.wants to know if she can take a message for Mary

74.In the second situation,Jill_____.A.knows that Mary has gone to bed B.doesn't know that Mary is asleep

C.thinks it's likely that Mary cannot answer the telephone D.is sure that Mary can not answer the telephone
